Booking about three weeks out. Next dog opening: Thursday, October 22.

Two groomers shaved Moose. I wrote his cut down instead.

I'm Tess Albright, and I groom dogs and cats by appointment in a converted garage on the east side of Rose Hill. It's one animal at a time here, so nobody sits in a kennel listening to someone else's dryer. Most go home in two to three hours, and I text you the minute they're dry.

Prices by size and coat

Moose gets a small mat behind his left ear every single visit. I pick it out and Dottie hears about it in the pickup text. Anything bigger, and I ring you from the table with a photo before I touch a clipper. So the number you hear at drop-off is the number at pickup, unless you've said yes to something else.

Dogs, Monday and Wednesday to Saturday. Prices include nails, ears and glands.

Doodles and poodles over 30 lb add $15. That coat takes longer to dry than any other on this list, and I'd rather tell you than pad every price.

  • Nail grind, smooth edges $12
  • Teeth brushing $8
  • De-shed treatment $20 to $40
  • Dematting, per 15 minutes $15

How short is short?

Penny's people said "not too short" and meant a lamb trim. Pearl's people said it and meant scissors round the eyes. So here are the lengths I cut, drawn to scale. Point at one at drop-off and we'll both know what's coming home.

#10 blade1/16 inch

Pads, sanitary, and the body on a cat's lion cut.

#7F blade1/8 inch

The shave-down for a matted coat. It grows back in about eight weeks.

#5F blade1/4 inch

Short summer cut. Still soft to touch, nothing to brush.

#4F blade3/8 inch

Where most doodles land after one bad tangle season. Moose lives here.

1/2 inch comb#3F, about the same

The puppy cut people picture when they say puppy cut.

3/4 inch combover a #30 blade

Teddy. Fluffy, but you'll need to brush twice a week to keep it.

1 inch combover a #30 blade

Barely a trim. Only on a coat that's brushed out to the skin.

If you say "not too short" and nothing else, I write down 3/4 and show you the comb at the door. Every time.

Biscuit's first slow visit was a bath and his face, nothing else. He came back six weeks later for the rest.

Slow visits, for dogs like Biscuit

Biscuit shook in the parking lot the first time. He'd come home from a groom somewhere else with a nick, and he hadn't forgiven anyone since. So he got a slow visit: 90 minutes, first thing in the morning, nobody else's dog booked before or after, and his person in the room with him instead of handing over a lead at the door.

  1. You walk in together. Lights low, radio off, a mat on the floor.
  2. Sniffing time. Treats on the floor, the table stays down at floor height.
  3. Nails, or not. If nails are the problem, we skip them today.
  4. Bath with the low-pressure hose, warm water, no force dryer after.
  5. Face and feet by scissor, so the clipper never buzzes near the head.
  6. We stop, finished or not, and book the next one.

Nobody gets sedated here, and no dog wears a muzzle for a whole groom. If a dog is biting to get away, we stop for the day. A half-done dog who had an okay morning beats a finished dog who learned to hate this. If it comes to that, I'll send you to your vet with notes.

Tuesdays are for cats

No dogs come into the studio on a Tuesday, and I run the dryer on its quietest setting all day. Long-haired cats get a bath and a full comb-out. Cats matted to the skin get a lion cut, which looks silly for about three weeks and saves them a summer of pulling.

A cat who needs sedation to be handled belongs at a vet clinic. I'll say so on the phone, so neither of you loses an hour finding out.

"Two groomers shaved Moose to the skin and handed him back without a word. Tess called me from the table with a photo of the mat and asked first. I drive 25 minutes from Augusta for that phone call."

Off the table this month

Every dog leaves with a card like Moose's, and the cut goes on it so next time is the same. Here are three of this month's, with the notes as written.

Apricot goldendoodle with an even short body cut and a round scissored face, sitting on boards

Moose, goldendoodle

Full groom, large, plus the doodle $15. Two hours ten.

#4F body, 3/4 legs, teddy face

A red miniature poodle trotting across grass, coat clipped into an even curly lamb trim with a full tail

Penny, miniature poodle

Full groom, small. Lamb trim, kept a little long for October.

5/8 body, 1" legs, clean feet

Close-up of a small white Maltese with dark eyes, the hair around its face trimmed short and neat

Pearl, Maltese

Bath and tidy, small. Face trimmed back so she can see again.

#5F feet and sani, scissor eyes, bow NO

The book, open after dark

Last week the phone rang three times while a Great Pyrenees was soaped up on the table. All three people booked here instead. Everything below writes into the same book I keep, so nothing gets double booked.

House rules

  • I book about three weeks out. No same-day appointments, ever. Regulars rebook at pickup, which is why the book is full. The sooner list is your best bet.
  • A rabies certificate before the first visit. Upload it or bring the paper. No certificate, no groom, and I'm sorry about that one.
  • Pickup within 30 minutes of my text. After that it's $10 per half hour, because the next dog is waiting in your dog's spot.
  • Pet grooms only. Hand-stripping and show grooms go to a specialist. If your schnauzer is going to Westminster, I'll gladly give you a name.
  • Two no-shows and I take a $20 deposit for future bookings. It comes off the bill the day you show.

Asked at drop-off

How often should my dog come in?

Curly coats every 4 to 6 weeks, or they mat. Double coats like a husky or a heeler every 8 to 12 weeks for a bath and de-shed. Short coats whenever they smell like a short coat.

Can I stay and watch?

For a slow visit, yes, and I'd like you to. For a regular groom, most dogs settle faster once you've left. They can hear you in the driveway, and so can I.

Do you take puppies?

From 12 weeks, once they've had their second round of shots. The first one is a $30 puppy intro: a bath, a nail trim and a lot of treats on the table, so the clipper isn't a stranger by six months.

Will you shave my double-coated dog for summer?

No. A shaved husky gets hotter, burns, and sometimes grows back patchy for a year. I'll de-shed instead and you'll be amazed what comes out.

Are you open weekends?

The first and third Saturday of each month, mornings only. Those fill first, so book them at pickup.
